Winter walkers got a win in council Monday night.
At Monday night's meeting, a plan was put in place to have the walking track at the 52 Canadians Arena reopened to public use during daytime hours. With councillor Behan voicing his support of having a means of exercise available to the public during the winter months, council agreed that the path would be open from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.
“Exercise benefits a person's physical and mental wellbeing and with winter fast approaching, it's important to have the option of using the indoor walking track available to our residents,” Behan said.
“Walking is a form of exercise and as such, I felt that mask use should not be required by users while they were actually walking around the track.”
However, the use of the path does come with a caveat. Users of the walking track will now be required to pay the $7 cleaning fee that had previously been attached to arena users in order to cover the cost of cleaning and sanitizing surfaces in the Sports Centre. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of the walking track had been free to members of the public.
Those who wish to use the path will be required to wear a mask from when they enter the building to when they reach the walking path, at which point it may be removed. Masks will need to be put back on when exiting the walking track.
